What are the challenges and opportunities of the Research-Based Learning (RBL) methodology? A perspective from pre-service teachers in the Physical Education Teaching program

The Research-Based Learning (RBL) model is used to foster critical thinking, autonomy, problem-solving, and research skills in students through inquiry. The objective of this study was to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the RBL methodology in the curricular activity of the Physical Activity Research Workshop, from the perspective of students in the Physical Education Teaching program at a private university in Santiago, Chile. Method: a qualitative approach was used through a case study, and eight university students participated in two focus groups. Results: students generally had a positive experience with the curricular activity related to research areas; however, they suggested that these tools should be gradually introduced from the first year of the program. Conclusion: in light of these results, it is suggested that the RBL methodology be further developed, given the value recognized by the students themselves.
